Natural Colonisation of a Marina Seawall by Scleractinian Corals along Singapore's East Coast

چکیده
— Highly modified habitats resulting from coastal development could facilitate the re-establishment of biological communities. At the Singapore Armed Forces Yacht Club in Changi, Singapore, the diversity and distribution of scleractinian corals were investigated using belt surveys at two different depths (1–3.5 m and 3.5–6 m) of a seawall. The 1,762 scleractinian colonies recorded are represented by 37 genera from 14 families. The dominant genera, in descending order, were Pectinia, Porites, Turbinaria, Goniastrea, and Leptastrea. Generic richness, abundance, and evenness were lower in the deeper belts. The majority of the colonies in the marina were juveniles smaller than 10 cm across, indicating that coral recruitment is an active, ongoing process, and that such environments, albeit highly modified, can function to support scleractinian diversity.

Large Scale Patterns of Antimicrofouling Defenses in the Hard Coral Pocillopora verrucosa in an Environmental Gradient along the Saudi Arabian Coast of the Red Sea
Large scale patterns of ecologically relevant traits may help identify drivers of their variability and conditions beneficial or adverse to the expression of these traits. Antimicrofouling defenses in scleractinian corals regulate the establishment of the associated biofilm as well as the risks of infection. The Saudi Arabian Red Sea coast features a pronounced thermal and nutritional gradient ...
متن کاملCoral feeding on microalgae assessed with molecular trophic markers.
Herbivory in corals, especially for symbiotic species, remains controversial. To investigate the capacity of scleractinian and soft corals to capture microalgae, we conducted controlled laboratory experiments offering five algal species: the cryptophyte Rhodomonas marina, the haptophytes Isochrysis galbana and Phaeocystis globosa, and the diatoms Conticribra weissflogii and Thalassiosira pseudo...
متن کاملGenetic diversity of plantations and natural stands of Avicenna marina across northern coast of Persian Gulf
The coasts of Imam Khomeini port are one of the most important hot spots of mangrove plantations across Iranian coast of Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman, so this is very important to conserve this valuable ecosystem. For this purpose, 75 individual from 3 populations, keeping the minimum distance of 30 to 50 meters from each other, has been collected and investigated using 15 ISSR markers. This st...
متن کاملBiostratigraphy and paleo-ecological reconstruction on Scleractinian reef corals of Rupelian-Chattian succession (Qom Formation) in northeast of Delijan area
In this research, biostratigraphy and paleo-ecological reconstruction of the Qom Formation deposits in Bijegan village, northeast ofDelijan, are discussed. The studied section is situated in the western margin of the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic arc (the intra-arc basin). The Qom Formation deposits at the studied area are Rupelian-Chattian in age. Larger benthic foraminifers are used for biostratigr...
متن کاملThe phylogeography and connectivity of the latitudinally widespread scleractinian coral Plesiastrea versipora in the Western Pacific.
Whereas terrestrial animal populations might show genetic connectivity within a continent, marine species, such as hermatypic corals, may have connectivity stretching to all corners of the planet. We quantified the genetic variability within and among populations of the widespread scleractinian coral, Plesiastrea versipora along the eastern Australian seaboard (4145 km) and the Ryukyu Archipela...
